    Da Capo Master Class, Bret Serrin, Piano

    Observe Master Clinician, Bret Serrin, as he inspires Suzuki Music Schools pianists of all ages and levels.

    Dr. Bret Serrin is widely recognized as one of the United States’ most brilliant young teachers and pianists. Born in Virginia, he began studying the piano at the age of five and gave his first public concert at the age of six. His talent soon attracted attention and while still a student, he won the prestigious Presser Music Scholarship, as well as numerous other awards. During this time, he attended the Adamant International Summer Music Festival in Vermont, where he was invited to perform a live concert broadcast on NPR (National Public Radio).

    Dr. Serrin is the recipient of gold medals in several international piano competitions, including the Los Angeles Liszt Competition, the Hubbard Solo and Chamber Music Competition (Dallas, Texas) and the Symphony Orchestra of Albuquerque Concerto Competition (New Mexico). Other highlights of his career include a silver medal at the National Society of Arts and Letters Competition in San Antonio, and a prize in the Steinway Society’s Career Grant Competition. Most recently, during the Hubedni Festival in the Czech Republic, he was awarded the silver medal in the prestigious Vysocina International Piano Competition.

    Pillow Concert: Amy Yang, piano

    Cozy up with your pillow for the second family-friendly concert of our online Pillow Concert Series with pianist, Amy Yang.

    A “jaw-dropping pianist who steals the show…with effortless finesse” (Washington Post), Amy Yang balances an active career as soloist, chamber musician and pedagogue. Collaborating with leading musicians, Ms. Yang toured with Patricia Kopatchinskaya, Tito Muñoz and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and premiered music by Michael Hersch at Cal Performances, Ojai Music Festival and Aldeburgh Festival. Additional collaborations include performances with Richard Goode, Anne-Marie McDermott, Ida and Ani Kavafian, Miriam Fried, Roberto Díaz, Kim Kashkashian, Joseph Silverstein, members of Guarneri String Quartet, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Dover Quartet, Aizuri String Quartet, Jasper String Quartet, Third Coast Percussion and A Far Cry. Ms. Yang’s debut on the Philadelphia Chamber Music Series followed solo engagements with the Houston Symphony, Tuscaloosa Symphony, Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, Mansfield Symphony and Orquesta Juvenil Universitaria Eduardo Mata at UNAM. She has performed under the batons of Adam Flatt, John Giordano, Thomas Hong, Mariusz Smolij and others. Ms. Yang has premiered music by Caroline Shaw, Avner Dorman, Michael Hersch, Ezra Laderman, Paul Wianko and Hua Yang. Festival appearances include Marlboro Music Festival, Ravinia Festival, Prussia Cove, Verbier Academy, Bravo! Vail, Chamber Music Northwest, Chelsea Music Festival, Caramoor, Olympic Music Festival, Music from Angel Fire, Twickenham Fest, Salt Bay Chamberfest, among others. An active recording artist, her discography includes a solo album (MSR Classics, 2019), chamber albums with violinist Itamar Zorman (BIS Records, 2019), violinist Tessa Lark (First Hand Records, 2019) and clarinetist José Franch-Ballester (iTinerant Records, 2011), as well as the live Aldeburgh Festival recording of Michael Hersch’s “I hope we get a chance to visit soon” with Tito Muñoz, members of Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Kiera Duffy, Ah Young Hong, Raphael Schenkel, Gary Louie, and Cody Dean (New Focus Records, 2020). Upcoming releases include music for solo piano by Ezra Laderman (Albany Records), and albums with tubist Carol Jantsch, violinist Danbi Um and cellist Blaise Dejardin. Ms. Yang is a member of the chamber music faculty at Curtis Institute of Music, program director and piano faculty member of Curtis Summerfest’s Young Artist Summer Program and teaches at the University of Pennsylvania and Haverford College. Winner of the 2018 Musical Fund Society of Philadelphia prize and the Kosciuszko National Chopin Piano Competition, she is an alumna of Curtis Institute of Music, Juilliard School and Yale School of Music, where she received the Parisot Award for Outstanding Pianist and the Alumni Association Prize. She enjoys making line drawings and tracing the mysteries of neuroscience.

    Ground-breaking flutist Zara Lawler, “an engaging, fluent, mellifluous soloist,” (Houston Chronicle) made her concerto debut with the Houston Symphony and her recital debut at New York’s Merkin Concert Hall. A recognized leader in the emerging field of interdisciplinary performance, Lawler has collaborated with choreographers, composers and stage directors to create new and adventurous concert experiences.
